September 2003 Aberdeen Royal Infirmary are undertaking a consultation process with both renal patients and health care workers about proposed changes to the Transplant Service. The surgeon in Aberdeen who performs the kidney transplants is retiring with no replacement and Aberdeen are hoping to extend the existing contract with Edinburgh to cover both cadaver and live donor transplants. There will be a meeting of the OKPA on Monday 15th September to discuss this issue before we make our comments formally to Aberdeen. The meeting will be held in the McClure Room at the Balfour Hospital at 7.00pm and is open to all members and other interested parties. 1). Joint talks with Orkney Health Service representatives were held and some progress towards establishing a renal unit in Orkney has been made. Orkney Health Board are seeking a location within the Balfour Hospital grounds for a portacabin which will be the home for the dialysis unit. Planning permission is still needed however and our Association has agreed to lobby the local council in support of the application. The OKPA has also issued an invitation to Dr Miller, the Aberdeen consultant with responsibility for Orkney patients, to visit Orkney and hold talks with both our members and Orkney Health Service on how services for renal patients can be developed. The association is also still seeking the establishment of Renal Clinics in Orkney and are continuing to lobby Orkney Health Board to achieve this objective.
2). Our first major fund raising event has just concluded. A big thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us during this period and special thanks to Mervyn Harcus for his help, guidance and gifts that have helped us raise nearly £3000!!. We are also very grateful to all the local businesses that so generously donated prizes for our raffle.
